Houghton Lake Community Education Receives Grant

Dear Roscommon County Community Foundation:

I am writing this letter to thank your organization for all that you have done for us in the past year.  Without your generosity, our school would be lacking in the things we need most.  I am very grateful that there are organizations like yours out there that are able to help schools and other organizations that need it.

We initially applied for our first grant during the second semester of the 2005-06 school year.  With your help, we were able to implement a course called Responsible Living.  This class has helped in many ways.  Since our school is alternative education, we were in desperate need of a class that would teach our students the basics of becoming a productive member of society once they graduated.  In this course we teach them things such as how to care for a child, college, careers, dangers of drugs and alcohol, relationships, and many other things.  Without your financial assistance, this class would not have been possible.

We just recently applied for another grant that would provide us with textbooks we so desperately need.  Graciously, you came through for us again.  We are now able to purchase new Michigan History textbooks along with maps, workbooks, and lesson plans.  Our textbooks are very outdated and provide no supplemental material.  We are also purchasing new literature textbooks with this grant.  The students are going to be ecstatic because we currently do not have any American literature textbooks with stories that they are able to relate to.

I would just like to thank you again on behalf of the administration, staff, and students at Houghton Lake Community Education.  Your organization has been instrumental in changing student’s lives.

Thank you,
Melisa Akers
